We are entering Russia. Through Samara, Moscow with every kilometer closer to home ...
We reach Aralsk. We want to see the Aral Sea. So we leave the asphalt to go for more than 90 km in the desert, to the village of Tastubek, and even a piece behind it (we were led by a resident of Tastubka). We are looking for famous shipwrecks in the desert. Unfortunately, we find out that 2 years ago they were demolished by the inhabitants ... We were late :-( a moment of rest in the desert (if you can rest at 46 degrees - because that's how long the thermometer showed you) and return to Aralska and the route to In the evening, we report on the Russian border - we make a small stop for a shower and a few hours of sleep.
We are leaving Kyrgyzstan and we are again moving to the deserts of Kazakhstan
Everything comes to an end, as also our visit to Kyrgyzstan is - but the project does not end - on the contrary, it is only the beginning of cooperation between veterinarians from Poland and Kyrgyzstan. In the morning, donations were given to veterinarians (operating equipment, autoclaves).
From the morning we were in Sokuluk, near Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan. Almost 6000 km away from home. The thermometer showed 37 degrees! We ran another day of training for veterinarians. On the spot we could notice, that we were not far from the capital. Next to the operating table there are accessories for small animals.
We return to Bishkek. The heat takes its toll. We have one more training day ahead of us, this time near the capital city, in Sokuluk.
That day in Alai we trained, talked, answered a lot of questions, distributed gifts brought from Poland but above all we were convincing people, that what we want to teach them is very important and necessary. We have the impression that we have succeeded! But there is still a lot ahead of us and doctors from Kyrgyzstan.
Another surprise from local vets. A trip to Peak Lenin - well, as we heard - it’s a ‘must see’ :) in the afternoon we leave Darot Koorgol, and we go towards Alai, where we will train another group of doctors.
On that day, in addition to training for veterinarians, we had the pleasure to participate in a seminar on echinococcosis in Darot Koorgol. We were invited to give a presentation on our project activities.
After a night spent in Osh, we continue south to our destination, Chong Alai. Local veterinarians are already waiting for us over there. In the afternoon we carry out the first treatments, presentations, trainings and long conversations about how it is now and how it can be in the future.
... which in the morning uncover their beauty before us. We spent the night in a yurt in the Susamyr Valley. In the morning the temperature fell below zero, the drink left overnight in a glass froze! And back in Bishkek, the day before it was 35 degrees! A little refresh, breakfast and we hit the road to Osh again.
After a few hours of sleep, we go for another meeting with our hosts from the veterinary chamber. We have a breakfast together, we talk, we specify plans for the next week. We rent an additional car that will drive Ułan - our Kyrgyz guide.
Around 7 a.m. we reached the border of Kyrgyzstan !!! We made it! On the way to Bishkek, we paid a visit to the customs office in Kara Balta (where we lost another 9.5 hours !!!). As a result, we arrive in Bishkek late in the evening. We are exhausted but happy, that we reached our final destination (almost on time).
We are crossing the deserts of Kazakhstan with a short break for a visit at the gate of Bajkonuru (unfortunately no time for proper sightseeing ). A quick glance at the Aralsk town and we get back on the road - we have to bein Bishkek on Friday!!! Driving through Kazakhstan turns out to be the source of quite strong emotions!! It is not unusual to wrong-way driving, even on the highway or driving at night without lights! Anyway – noone said it would be easy ;-)
In the evening, we finally reach Kazakhstan. And it’s high time to change habits and adapt to new surroudings. The endless road ahead of you, flat horizon, and almost non existent petrol stations! Unfortunately, diesel fuel is not available at every station. Only desert, camels, horses and cows around ...
At 8:15 a.m. we left the Moscow ring road and headed to Kazan. Along the way we stop for a small refresh and shopping. Unbelievable how much pleasure one can get from a simple shower after such a long ride! In the evening we enjoyed a few hours of rest and a meal at the bank of the Oka river. A moment of relief also for the eyes that had to be focused on the road for many hours. We didn’t have too much time, so we decided to go and drive at night to reach Kazakhstan as soon as possible.
Due to unexpected problems with the customs office in Russia, we had to spend 26 hours at the border crossing :( It was necessary to submit additional documents, and it wouldn’t be possible without the help of people supporting us from Poland! It’s difficult to describe emotions that we experienced at that time. Especially because while one car was let to cross the border, we were not sure the other one will be released as well. Finally, it was over! Uffff ..... Despite thetiredness we had to keep moving… Direction - Kazakhstan.
At 3:30 a.m. the Veterinary Expeditions team set off on a journey to Kyrgyzstan, with two cars and eight people on board. At 01:26 p.m. we left Poland and crossed the border with Lithuania and right after 10 p.m. we checked in at the border between Latvia and Russia, which, as it turned out, was the beginning of a quite a big challenge!
Olympus Polska will support the expedition with photo cameras. Thank you!
We obtained visas to Russia. We already know that we will operate in the Osh region and Chon Alai in Kyrgyzstan.
