Expeditions – Kyrgyzstan 2019:

  • We visited two faculties of veterinary medicine in Bishkek, where we talked about the education and challenges faced by the profession of veterinarian in Kyrgyzstan;
  • We personally got acquainted with the Kyrgyz drug distribution system – we visited veterinary pharmacies in Bishkek;
  • We were at a market where dogs and cats are traded;
  • We have provided for the use of veterinarians a self-made instructional video on the technique of sterilizing bitches;
  • We have pre-trained over 40 veterinarians on sterilization techniques and the basics of parasitological examination;
  • We can already say about three veterinarians that they are fully independent in the scope we have trained them and successfully carry out the sterilization and castration of dogs. Their task is now to train colleagues and pass on the acquired knowledge. We will check the effects next year;
  • We had meetings with children in two primary schools in At-Basha, during which we talked about ways to prevent echinococcosis. The children received us warmly: there was an exhibition of art works, there was an essay competition, there were performances and shows!;
  • We distributed about 800 educational bags among children and adults with the printed content "how to protect against echinococcosis"; We handed out the bags at schools, at conferences and also directly on streets;
  • In two primary schools, we conducted ultrasound screening of children, teachers and all those interested in echinococcosis. 442 people were examined. As a result of the examination, one person was referred for treatment and two children for observation;
  • We took part in a conference with representatives of the Ministry of Health and Agriculture, devoted to the problem of echinococcosis, during which Daniel Figiel gave a presentation showing the relationship between the population of homeless dogs and the occurrence of echinococcosis in humans, and proposed a humane alternative to the killing in Kyrgyzstan, a way to control the homeless population dogs. The lecture attracted a lot of interest, there were questions and talks behind the scenes;
  • We visited a veterinary clinic in Karakol where one of the autoclaves had been transferred by us last year. We are very happy that the equipment works and serves the veterinarians and their patients. During the visit, Dr. Mirbek showed us the surgical technique in sheep, removing tapeworm cysts from the frontal sinus!;
  • Courtesy of Dr. Mirbek, we sterilized Lucky, the history of whom you learned a year ago;
  • Our Kyrgyz friends took care of every minute of our stay in their country – they bent space and time and managed to spare a moment to relax in the surroundings of beautiful mountains;
  • At the end of our stay, we handed over to our partners 5 microscopes, ultrasound devices, surgical equipment and medical materials for use by the Kyrgyz veterinarians and medicine.
